The Secret to Workplace Productivity
It is no secret that prefabricated metal buildings are not the most inviting. However, it may come as a surprise how much a little natural light can change that. With Americans spending an average of 90% of their time indoors, adequate access to natural light has become a vital part of the modern workplace. Installing commercial fixed windows is not only more aesthetically pleasing, but it provides economic and emotional benefits as well.
Does Your Workplace Need More Natural Light?
Many work buildings include large windows in executives’ offices but leave lower-tier employees to work under fluorescent lights for 8 hours. Studies have shown that this is not the way to get the most productivity out of employees. A poll of 1,614 North Americans found that 47% of them felt tired or very tired from the absence of natural light, and 43% felt gloomy because of it. According to a Future Workplace Employee Experience study, 70% of employees reported improved work performance when exposed to natural light and outside views. They’re not just saying that either. A separate study found that employees sitting near a window increased productivity by 2% – the equivalent of $100,000 a year for every 100 workers.
Installing more fixed commercial windows will do more than increase the work and value of your organization. It will also improve employee satisfaction. Studies show that access to natural light and outdoor views is the number one quality they look for in a workplace, ranking above other popular characteristics like onsite cafeterias and fitness centers. Research indicates that adequate daylight results in 51% less eyestrain, 63% fewer headaches, and 56% decrease in drowsiness. The Future Workplace Employee Experience study found that 78% of employees say access to natural light improves their wellbeing. Researchers at the Interdepartmental Neuroscience program at Northwestern University in Chicago found that workers without windows reported lower quality of life scores than those who worked near windows. Generally, the windowless workers had poorer measures of overall sleep quality, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction. It only makes sense – happier workers produce better work. Make sure your employees have plenty of daylight and outdoor views in their workplace.
