According to a recent OSHA news report, a roofing contractor in Middlefield, OH recently violated OSHA fall protection requirements for ladders. This latest failure continued a pattern of safety violations dating back to 2019. Following the June investigations, OSHA proposed $363,890 in penalties for C.R.H. Roofing LLC. OSHA found safety violations at two different C.R.H. job sites within the span of six days in June 2022. The violations at both worksites consisted of roofers working at heights above 6 feet without fall protection and a lack of eye protection while using pneumatic nail guns. The company also violated OSHA fall protection requirements for ladders.
Following three previous inspections in 2019 and 2021, the company was fined more than $51,000 in penalties. OSHA has now placed them in its Severe Violator Enforcement Program. They have 15 business days from receipt of citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings before the independent OSHA Review Commission.
“Too many roofers die each year needlessly because their employers fail to use fall protection,” said OSHA Area Director Howard Eberts in Cleveland. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 1,008 construction workers died on the job in 2020. 351 of those deaths were related to falls from elevation.
